The nutmeg was first brought into Penang in the year 1794 by an Irishman named Christopher Smith, who set up Penang’s very first botanical spice gardens. Since then, nutmeg trees have only been planted and sold commercially in this island and nowhere else in Malaysia. Interestingly enough, the practice of consuming nutmeg in the form of a beverage is unique to Penang and nowhere else in the world.
